ART THERAPY
'Often the hands will solve a mystery that the intellect has struggled with in vain'
Carl Gustav Jung
Art Therapy is a process by which individuals can gain a clearer understanding of themselves by exploring difficult thoughts and feelings through the use of art materials. Images can be a way of exploring thoughts and feelings that are not quite clear enough to be dealt with in words alone.
The client needs no art skills or experience, as the process, meanings and associations are of greater importance than the finished product.
Art Therapy is suitable for all ages, and is particularly important for children, adolescents and traumatized adults because it offers alternative means of communication through unique but highly accessible art. This is vital for children and adolescents with difficulties. Children lack the sophisticated speech and adolescents find the gap between themselves and adults daunting: artwork provides an initial bridge for both. The process as well as the product offers a language (non-verbal and symbolic) through which the client can express unconscious feelings, wishes, fears and fantasies central to their inner experiences.
